Featured Natural Beauties: Introducing Jenell of Kinky Curly Coily Me

How long have you been a beauty with natural hair?
I’ve been natural for 6 months and counting.
Who or What inspired you to embrace your natural hair and your overall natural beauty?
On March 19, 2009, my cousin started talking to me about “going natural”. Meaning, we would no longer put chemical relaxers in our hair and we would allow our hair to grow out naturally. I thought she was crazy!
After watching hundreds of YouTube videos by brave women who decided to go natural and cut off all their relaxed hair, my cousin and I were inspired.
The following Friday night (March 26, 2010) we got together and ate some food and drank some Nuvo and made the decision to do the BIG CHOP! She cut off my hair and I cut off hers!

What is your current haircare routine?
I co-wash my hair 1-2x a week. I shampoo my hair 1-2x a month. I deep condition after every shampoo. I add oils after co-washing to seal in moisture. I use hair butters, such as Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, to set my hair in twists, flattwists, and Bantu knots.

Name three products that your natural tress could not thrive without.
Conditioner – Giovanni Deeper Moisture or Hello Hydration
Hair Butter – Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie
Oil – Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil
What protective hairstyles do you wear to protect you ends from being damaged?
My protective style of choice is Kinky Twists using synthetic hair. I wore my hair in Kinky twists for a month and a half and the growth was amazing when I took them down.
Do you use heat styling tools on your natural hair? If so, what products do you use to protect your hair from heat damage?
I blow-dried my hair 3 times and I added oil to seal the moisture into my wet hair and I use Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie to add moisture.

Has your perspective of beauty changed, since you’ve made the choice to wear your hair natural? How so?
I realize now that my natural hair is gorgeous, full, thick and healthy. I was never interested in my natural hair because it was too thick, too rough, and just too much to handle. In the past 6 months I’ve accepted my hair and I have invested so much time in my hair. I just love it. I’ve received so many compliments about my new look.
What advice would you give to other women who may be considering the natural journey?
Have realistic expectations. Don’t go natural under false pretenses and expect that your curls will look like someone else’s. Your journey isn’t going to be easy but it will be very fun and very informative. Your hair won’t grow 15 inches over night, but with good hair care and a good regimen it will grow beyond 15 inches!
Finish this sentence: I love my natural hair because……….
I love my natural hair because it represents the Kinky Curly Coily Me!
